Exposed

When you go three months without losing a single football game, it is much easier to look over mistakes or issues that may be going on. Your team is 11-0, what could possibly be the problem?

If you ask a Pittsburgh Steeler fan you may hear a 20-minute ramble. If you ask Mike Tomlin you will get honesty, respectfully.

The Steelers started out 11-0 and are now suffering from back-to-back losses. They now have just a 5% chance for a first round playoff bye (according to FiveThirtyEight). Pittsburgh is no team that feels as though they need a bye in order to play in Miami on February 7, 2021. They won the Super Bowl in 2006 with a Wild Card entry.

Let's dig a little deeper because this team is not the same team that has swept the Baltimore Ravens, beat the Houston Texans 28-21, beat the Tennessee Titans 27-24, and beat all other seven opponents.

During their first loss of the season to the Washington Football Team in Week 13, eight passes were dropped. That is the most a team has dropped for a quarterback in a game all season. Diontae Johnson is an elusive and explosive receiver, but everything is diminished if you are not catching the football. It became apparent that Eric Ebron and Chase Claypool were struggling as well when JuJu Smith-Schuster became the leading receiver for Sunday night's game ... with 55 yards.

Mike Tomlin, front-runner for NFL Coach of the Year, said that receivers "can catch the ball or they can get replaced by those who will catch it." I told you, honesty.

It does not help that the rushing game seems to be a little slack recently, too. Pittsburgh is averaging just 3.7 yards per rush attempt. Over the last seven games, the highest rushing game they had came against the Jacksonville Jaguars with 106 yards. Replacing the run game with quick passes is okay when ... your receiving core is consistently catching the ball and you have a healthy quarterback under the age of 35. Ben Roethlisberger has 141 pass attempts over the last three games. That is more than enough for a quarterback coming off of an elbow injury that required surgery.

Pittsburgh uses play-action fakes less than any other team in the league. To be slacking in physicality means that your team's deceptiveness should be a strength. This seems to be the core of their issue ... all of their previous strengths show glimpses of becoming a weakness. Yes, I said it. Yes, I am even referring to the defense. The defense slowing down is currently battling the uncontrollable bug of injuries. The inside linebacker position is the pivot to Pittsburgh's 3-4 scheme. It started with Devin Bush out for the season with an ACL injury. Robert Spillane comes in and is placed on injured reserve.

I try extremely hard to not place any bias in my writing when it comes to the Pittsburgh Steelers, but I did have to grab a box of tissues in order to write this next reality. The man who has recorded 19.5 sacks over the last two seasons, TJ Watt's partner in crime, Bud Dupree tore his ACL during Week 12's debatable debacle.

Three months without a loss and now at a loss for words.

Steeler Nation wants the good news, right? Yes, there is a bright side to all of this, fans. Pittsburgh has three more weeks in the regular season to begin to piece everything together, again. If you do know anything about this historic franchise and the coach that is Mike Tomlin, any time is enough time.

They do still have a future Hall of Famer at quarterback in Big Ben, Defensive Player of the Year candidate in TJ Watt, experience in the playoffs (and the Super Bowl), multiple Pro Bowl contenders on their entire roster ... and a Tik Tok phenom.

The Cleveland Browns are in playoff contention. Anything is possible, right?
Head up, Steeler fans. The season is far from over and still plenty of time to prepare for those Kansas City Chiefs for the AFC Championship.

2020 -- GOODbye

I do not plan on this being your typical, cliché publication of "Yay, 2020 is almost over. Let's get to it, 2021." We will see enough of that on our Twitter timelines and Instagram feeds over the next 72 hours. 2020 has had ups and it has had downs, maybe some more than others. You don't need my personal testimony. I am more for sharing sports stories and opinions anyway.  Speaking of ups and downs, what better way to describe the 2020 sports year than that? January alone had a few great ups, but also had one of the biggest downs we as sports lovers would experience all year. It started off with the LSU Tigers capping off an undefeated and incredible season with a National Championship over the Clemson Tigers. Heisman trophy winner Joe (or, JEUX) Burrow threw up an incredible stat line of 463 yards and five touchdowns. On January 14 the WNBA established a groundbreaking collective bargaining agreement (CBA). The new CBA included substantial salary increases, improve...

The Hunger, The Redemption

After an outstanding first round of this year's NBA playoffs... How outstanding? FIVE game 7's! That's right, five. This would be an NBA record.  Here we are.  They're calling it 'The Rematch,' and rightfully so, but there's been a few changes since that seven game series.  The Heat have lost Mike Miller and Juwan Howard. You know, Mike Miller? He lost his shoe in game 6, fourth quarter, still managed to hit a three. Seems pretty clutch... HA, when speaking of game 6 we don't speak of some guy who lost his shoe. Ray Allen over everything in THE Game 6. Please tell me you remember that.  Only in Game 6. This one haunts all of Spurs Nation.   The infamous tatted Birdman may make his presence on the court, but will he be 100%? While we're on the subject of health, or lack of, will Dwayne Wade even be 100%? He seems to think so as he stated in his press conference. What about Tony Parker? If we are being honest, those two do not need t...

Nearly Impossible To Compare

You are all familiar with the term 'rivalry,' right? Maybe you all have heard of a specific rivalry that I will writing about... Tom Brady vs. Peyton Manning? It is pretty well-known in the sports world, you may have heard of the two. Peyton Manning and Tom Brady will be facing off for the 15th time this Sunday in the AFC Championship game. This is also known as the "Branning Bowl." Clever, right? I wish I could say I came up with that one. Legendary. I'm going to throw some statistics at you now just to show how 'hall of fame-like' these two are.    The combined record between the two, including post-season, is 343-136. A total of 126,169 career combined passing yards. The total earnings between the two in 2013 was 68.3 million dollars. That turns out to be a pretty nice pay check, right? Over their career, combined, 850 touchdown passes have been thrown.  Last, but not least, these two Hall of Fame quarterbacks have combined for a tota...
